New Digital Signage Service at Seoul Subway Stations :: 2010/06/10 10:30

Do you remember a mall scene of Minority Report? If you can’t remember it, watch the below video-clip.

I sometimes wonder whether it will be possible to witness similar situations near myself in ten or twenty years. By the way, I was very surprised by the fact that I have been already exposed to a lot of digital signage at mall, convenience store, theater and subway. After recognizing this, I researched the current market size of Korean digital signage. Although I am not sure it is exact forecast, according to many Korea’s media estimate, the size of the Korean digital signage market  will be an estimated $100 mil this year. I expect that more various and interesting digital signage services will appear in a few years.

Today, I want to introduce a unique digital signage which is provided at subway stations of Seoul, Korea. The name of the digital signage is “Digital View’ and it is provided by Daum (a major Korean internet portal) and Finger Touch. Refer to the below picture.

People in Seoul can see this big device at every subway station. According to the service provider, they already installed 913 devices at 117 stations. This device has two touch-panel screens, 42” main screen and 17” supplementary screen. The main screen shows a lot of information, including Seoul subway map, real-time news and entertainment content. In addition, people can use VoIP service using the small touch-panel screen. The VoIP service is currently provided for free and it is expected that this service will be a paid-service later. I took some pictures of this new device and described the details of each picture.

New Location-based Mobile Advertisement Service :: 2008/12/12 00:01

User image

Today, I’d like to introduce a mobile service. It is a location-based mobile advertisement service. Users can ccess to this service through pushing “**0” + mobile data hot key. When a user connects to the initial page, the service shows various shops which are located near the user. GPS enables the service to be operated.

I took the below photo at my home.
The service informs me of various informations about shops near my home.

Even though the service does not attract many users yet, I think this service has a growth potential. In order to make this service more active, the service providers have to attract both more advertisers and more users. However, I think this service already provides very useful information about stores such as Starbucks, Pizza Hut and Nike store near my location.

Mobile Mash-up Service, My Portal of SK Telecom :: 2008/08/02 16:34

   SK Telecom released a new mobile service which is the first mobile mash-up service in Korea. My Portal service enables users to make their own mobile homepages with various such as opened news articles of Google and their own blog postings. For example, most of contents on web are made based on XML language and support RSS function which makes contents to be provided on various devices and applications. When users make a mobile home page using My Portal service, they can gather various contents from Internet.

   I also made my mobile homepage using My Portal service. I could take my blog postings to the homepage using RSS function and post some news article of Naver (the most famous web portal in Korea) regarding mobile services. Because most of current web services provide provided Open API, people can make a mobile mash-up homepages using various contents from many web sites.

   In the initial stage, some famous idol stars made their own mobile homepages on My Portal service and are attracting their fans to the pages. In addition, some companies can make their own mobile homepages for promotion of their products and companies. The below image shows mobile homepage of a famous korean star.

My Portal

   There are two methods for users to connect  to My Portal service with their mobile handsets. The first one is to push only '479 + send button'. Users can connect to the initial page of My Portal service and see well categorized list of mobile homepages, including famous stars' homepages and ordinary people's. The second methos is to push 'phone numbers + # + send button'. If users know someone's phone number and want to connect to his or her mobile homepages, they only push the phone numbers in order to connect to the homepages.

   SK Telecom started to promote the service through TV commercial. TV commercial emphasizes that users can make their own mobile homepages. If users want to use mobile internet service with their mobile handsets, they had to connect to the initial page which mobile operators provide. However, if users make their own mobile homepages using My Portal service, they can enjoy their own initial mobile services which include contents selected by each user. The below is the TV commercial for My Portal service.
